A couple of weeks ago I was in a situation where I needed to be able to describe my blog concisely to other people. A friend of mine said (roughly paraphrasing), "That's easy. It's a rant blog. You post whenever you feel like you're taking up comments threads ranting about something."
I have to say, this stung a bit. It stung because I felt that this description ignored the other things I write about. It also stung because it's not untrue.
So.
I'm trying to figure out what I want this blog to be, if I don't want it to devolve into a "rant blog."
This may take awhile.

I don't think this is a rant blog - sure, you *do* rant (don't we all?), but you post a lot of nature writing, too, as well as other life stuff).

Someone asked me what my blog was about lately. All I could say was, "It's not about anything - except the things that interest me."

Nothing wrong with a rant blog, either--your rants are articulate and often break down complicated topics into easily-understood arguments.

Your posts don't really seem like rants, or at least not rants as I understand them. It's more like a personal (but public) journal.

I'm actually on the hunt for more good rant blogs, and found yours. Everyone has too much focus on their blogs these days. I like an eclectic writer.
