Stubborn, or Crazy?

It has been nearly impossible to mow the lawn the last week. It rained every afternoon, the only time I was able to do it. The backyard was becoming particularly frightening; when I came back from Wildbranch I'd only had the time and energy to do the front lawn. So the back lawn was at least two weeks overgrown, and overwatered.

Today, it was finally sunny enough to get to the mowing -- good thing, too, as D. and I are going out of town for a wedding, and it would be really jungle-esque if it went yet another week unshorn.

I got half of the back lawn done.

Only half. I managed to kill the mower. Completely.

After a long drive up to the Sears in North City, we returned without the mower to a yard full of clover and long seed heads. So I did what anyone might do, faced with the potential disapproval of neighbors and anxiety about the lawn killing the mower again when it returned from the shop.

I trimmed the front lawn.

With the weed whacker.

Grasslegs

Behold, the result.

(The lawn is too ridiculous to show. Just imagine a kid's head after a barber has had to cut gum out of his hair. That's about the right idea.)

Oh, one other thing.

I managed to kill the weed whacker too.

Total spit-take.

HI-larious.

I hope it was fun. It sounds kinda fun.

Hee! We actually did that once to a weed whacker, too.

Laughing out loud! I'm just glad that you're not allergic to grass pollen!

Our lawn is in worse shape than yours, I'll bet. Our rotary mower really, really needs to be sharpened. It can't seem to manage to cut tougher stalks where the grass is flowering. So, post mow, me have a short grass base overtopped with long flowering stalks, just a-waving in the breeze.

"Crazy or Stubborn"? This is a false dichotomy, no?

I'll take C.) All of the above for 100, Alex. We have a weed whacker and have found it to be a pretty useless beastie. You're welcome to it if you come get it!

[/shameless]

Wow that's funny. Also quite a feat though. I don't think I'd have the patience or the steady-handedness to weed-whack an entire lawn. Did it come out even?

"Did it come out even?" he asks.

Oh, heck no. It's short (well, it was short) but nothing resembling even.

It was sort of fun, once I got over feeling self-conscious about doing such a daft thing, out there in the front yard and all, but it was also hard on the back -- the handle's not long enough to swing back and forth without bending. And my legs were green to the knee with little flecks, as you can see.

Phantom, I loathe those tough little grass stems! They have this knack for bending over when the mower goes over them, then sproinging up jauntily afterward. Grr.

On the other hand, the weed whacker does do a good job on them.

Jill - thanks for the offer (laughs)! Actually, this afternoon, I'm going to the hardware store for a new "whip" to put in the whacker (that's why it stopped -- the whip reached the end and flew out) so I can whip the lawn again today.

(The mower is at the repair shop for the next two weeks. Sigh.)
