This is a swatch I've done to see how the yarns look together, and to choose a pattern for the hem and cuffs of the sweater-to-be. It's less fleck-y in real life.

Can you knit pictures? I won't advertise commercial stuff on your site so I'll just say go to the last link in my blog roll (which is for a yarn business my friend designed the website for) and have a look at the textile pictures in the competition section. They're so pretty they make me want to take it up and I'm strictly a pen and ink girl.
IA -- it's pretty easy; you just have to start small. It's usually easier to learn if someone shows you than if you try to learn from a book (I know, because I can compare D. picking it up quickly after watching me and his aunt, with my slow slog using only books). Is there a yarn store in town? They usually have classes and can offer a lot of advice and support.
Duckling -- I haven't tried doing pictures yet. I'm somewhat intimidated by the need to manipulate and keep track of multiple balls (well, bobbins) of yarn. But, then, lace was less scary than I'd thought, so maybe I'll give it a go one of these days.
That's a beautiful colour.
I wish I knew how to knit.
