A Quiet Week

I haven't been up to much this week, either at home or at work. Television and computer, two screens, brief punctuations to make cocoa (the only free drink mix at work I like), or knit, or eat. Booo-ring.

My samples for the sweater-to-be are turning out well. Next, getting more yarn. And restraining myself from just bounding into the project without thinking it through first.

A general knitting-related question: does anyone know of any simple non-hat, non-scarf patterns that a man might enjoy making? D. is tired of scarves and doesn't just want to knit endless samplers. He's not intimidated by complicated stitches (he's in a slip-stitch phase now) but is a fairly conservative dresser and doesn't want a complicated pattern (one thing at a time, he says). Thoughts?

I'm feeling political these days, though I'm not sure why. Probably too much time on the poli-blogs.

What are you folks up to these days? The blogosphere seems fairly quiet in my neck of the woods of late.

What about a cell phone/iPod/remote control cozy? I'm not a knitter, so I don't know how it rates for simplicity - and I suppose it's not the manliest trinket in the world either, but it *is* a step away from the same old clothes. Or maybe mittens?

How about socks? They're not nearly as scary as some people think. I like this site for info: http://www.woolworks.org/patterns/genericsocks.txt
Or maybe he'd like to knit squares to be assembled into an afghan? There's a knit-along at http://www.masondixonknitting.com/archives/2004_02.html#000273.

Could he try something really sturdy and thick knit for holding something manly like hammers and chisels and stuff.

Hmm... I think I might need to clarify a bit as to the sort of manly man D. is. Urban academic scholarly type is more what we're talking about here, rather than under-the-hood grease monkey, football sports man, or woodsy outdoors guy. (I'm more likely to be the one wielding the hammer or the grease gun.)

Basically, he wants a non-girly project more than a macho project. (Though the idea of a "cozy" did amuse him.)

does he wear ties?

Not often. Khakis and rugby shirts are the usual mode de jour.

Well, all academic types need goofy hand-knit thingies to hang spectacles around their necks with. How else to demonstrate a suave lack of connection with reality?

Oh, he's an academic? How about a traditional Papuan hill tribesman's penis sheath? They're usually made out of gourds, but I think a knit one might work for casual Docker's-type city wear.

O. my. god.

I am just dying here!

I give up. I can't beat the penis sheath, there's no use being goofy ever again. Slippers?
